No sonogram until 12 weeks?!

Okay so I’m sooooo confused. This is my first pregnancy. I’m 23 years old. And my doctor is not letting me have an ultrasound until 12 weeks, is this normal?!

yes, many drs don't do early scans because too many women don't see what they expect to see (a heartbeat, a baby, a fetal pole, etc) so they wait until later on when there would be less causes for alarm. My dr doesn't do one in first trimester at all unless medically indicated.

I was 29 years old with my first. They did a Doppler at 8 or 10 weeks. Ultrasound at 20 weeks. It was a decade ago, it seems like women are getting them much earlier now. I’d say 12 is normal when you’re young and not high risk.

We don’t get ultrasounds in Canada til our anatomy scans at 20 weeks lol. We can have elective ones we pay for sooner though.

Yep! Perfectly normal. My first one isn’t until the 17th of August. I’ll be 9 weeks almost 10 then.

I had my first visit with my GP yesterday and he said I won’t need an early dating scan because I’m healthy and I know the first day of my last period. He said that I likely won’t get an ultrasound until 20 weeks but I start seeing the OB at the maternity clinic at 10 weeks (I’m 7 now) so we’ll see. Sucks and the anticipation of knowing it’s real is killing me!

This is my second pregnancy and they did 1 at 12 weeks with my first because my periods were irregular. Not sure if it will be the same this time.
