Not married who’s surname should I give my baby?

I’m 6 months pregnant now and been with my partner for 5 years, we aren’t married. Who’s surname should the baby have? Initially I said the baby can have my partners however, I am now feeling differently and want him to have mine so that when we attend appointments etc, our surnames won’t be different. Thanks 🤗

Could you double barrell the last name, so the baby has both? My situation is slightly different because my OH and I got married and both double barrelled our names anyway, but I love that our daughter has both of our last names

We’re married but both kept our own names. We hyphenated our daughters and honestly I regret it. What’s she going to do for her kids, triple barrelled?! I wish we’d given her my name since we’re very close with my family and hardly see his. But that seemed to make everyone lose their freaking minds so... here we are, with a ridiculously long name and a problem for her to deal with when she gets married.

Surprisingly I would check your state laws. Where I live, since I am unmarried I’m actually not legally able to give the baby anyone’s last name but my own.

It’s totally your personal choice. Hyphenate, use your name, use his name, use a totally different name, mash the two together, whatever you please! My husband and I are using his mother’s family name for our children, since neither of us feels it’s fair for the child to only have one of our names, and we don’t hyphenate well.

I personally would give the baby mine last name if we weren’t married. I have tons of girlfriends that have kids and they gave them their fathers last names and they always say it’s one of the biggest mistakes they made.

Me and my boyfriend haven’t been together very long (the baby was definitely unplanned) but I plan on giving my baby his surname. If I were having a girl I’d probably have picked my surname but I like he thought of his family name being passed on, so seeing as it’s a boy he’ll have my boyfriends last name 🙂
