Cutting the first tooth

My daughter will be a year old this week and is *finally* getting her first tooth. Here’s my question: about how long did it take that first tooth to erupt through the gums when you could see it bulging underneath and your baby was miserable over it?

My daughter is one of the unfortunate ones who is spiking a fever, unable to sleep, severely fussy, not wanting to eat, etc. It started yesterday afternoon and last night we were able to feel the tooth under her gums for the first time. I just want to know how long I should expect for this to last :(
