boyfriend mad that I don’t want a hickey

So tonight my boyfriend wanted to give me a hickey and he tried to put it on my neck and I stopped him. I told him he could go anywhere else but not on a spot like my neck that is visible to everyone. He got upset and accused me of being ashamed of our relationship. I told him that that wasn’t true, that one hickey doesn’t even prove that it’s from him. The reason is because it would embarrass me, it looks unclassy, and I don’t want anyone to know that we’re having sex! It’s our business only. I explained all this to him but he got mad and said “I can’t believe you would be so immature to not let me give you a hickey.” I told him that wasn’t fair and that it was my body and he needed to respect it and he said that it wasn’t fair to him that I wasn’t letting him “mark his love” on me. I’m upset and this feels ridiculous. Did I make too big of a deal out of it? Should I hav just let him done it?
