Doesn't ask to be feed, orange colored spit up?

My baby is 3 days old. I'm a FTM trying to get the hang of breastfeeding. I feel as if he doesn't show me signs of hunger. Once in a while he does but I find that I usually just try to feed him if it's been a while. Normal? Also... A little after a feeding, I noticed he had spit up a bit and was almost orange like in color. Why is this?

My daughter had orange spit up about 3-4 days after birth. My pediatrician said it was bile and mucus. He said it was normal and it changed to white once my milk fully came in.

Newborns don't "self regulate" or demand to be fed until close to two weeks, this is why you have to wake them to eat every 2 to 3 hours.

I don't know about the Orange spit up but perhaps your not seein the hunger cue signs. I have attached a screen shot of early  active and late cues. Obviously you want to notice in the early and active cue not the late.

Newborns sometimes are too tired from the birthing process and still confused about why they have to work so hard to eat when before they were fed through their umbilical cord.  In a few days your baby should become more hungry and his/her "signs" should become more noticeable.  It is recommended to feed your newborn every 2-3 hours whether or not they appear hungry, that's so they don't lose too much weight or they blood sugar doesn't go down too much, as well as for your milk supply to establish.  As far as the spit up, I've not need my daughter spit up anything but white milk, but I have heard that certain foods can affect the color of your breast milk, so if your milk is orange that would make sense.
