Period that's overstayed its welcome

I had a period for 28 days straight. They put me on the pill and it stopped but I was sick for 4 months and stopped well 2 weeks after I stopped and had a period. I had another period and it's awful. Heaviest period I've had in a long time. I'm making an appointment Monday but has anyone else had this issue? I'm so sick of being on my period. I'm scarred to switch to another birth control because the first one made me so sick. All this started because I quit taking the shot so getting back on it isn't an option
