Not talking after our first fight - please help!

Last night my SO and I had our first big fight - and it was bad. If you didn't see my post last night about it, it was over the phone and I ended up hanging up on him. It's the next morning and I haven't heard one word from him. I know that Im the one who ended the conversation but he was the aggressor in the fight - he was the one saying the hurtful things that I didn't deserve to have to listen to. This is our first fight so I don't know what to do. I don't think I should have to be the one to reach out to him and apologize. But what if he just keeps this cold shoulder up? I'm in unknown territory here.  If he loved me as much as he says he does then wouldn't he man up and apologize? Any advice is appreciated. Please don't say to just talk to him, because he needs to know that the things he said are not okay and that I won't be the one crawling back to him after every fight.
