Forgiving my brothers murderer?

Question

How? I know people forgive those who have wronged them for their own peace but how do I do it? How do I know if I truly have forgiven him and do I really have to??? 
My brother isnt coming back either way, I understand that, so what is the best thing to do now?
Any suggestions, experience or thoughts?

Forgive, but don’t forget. You’ll be glad once you do. It’s going to be one of the hardest things you’ll ever have to do and dealing with the situation won’t be any easier after you do, but once you are in a place to forgive, it’ll be a HUGE weight off your shoulders.

So my experience isn't totally the same, but my grandmother was killed instantly in a head-on collision with an 18 wheeler.  He was speeding around the curve in the road, crossed the line, and hit her so hard that the force threw her body into the backseat of the car despite her wearing a seatbelt.  And what was worse, the driver was related to someone I knew.  
I'll admit, for nearly a year, I wanted his head.  I wanted compensation for everything that he took away from our family, that she'd never see her youngest two grandchildren get married or see her first great grandchild.  But in the end, my faith in the Bible's promises for the future was what got me through it and allowed me to completely forgive him.   Plus I knew my grandmother wouldn't want me to spend the rest of my life grieving over her and she'd want me to be forgiving.  
Ironically, one of my father's workmates is related to that driver and he's said that his relative was never quite the same after that; that the knowledge that he caused someone's death by a bad decision still haunts him.  And for me, that's punishment enough.
