How do we bring more good people into the police force?

I was talking to my cousin (a police officer) about how police academies are starting to struggle to get good recruits.

He mentioned that the problem is that with everything going on in the media and the stigma around the police force, it’s scaring away the people you actually want to be cops (rational thinking, good people, not profilers). After that, you’re left with a lot of people who were bullies in high school and are just in it for the power trip. My cousin is in charge of recruiting and has said it’s actually kind of scary with the choices they have.

How can society/police academies entice people to want to be cops?
