Child forced to relieve self in classroom during lockdown

Mo

Fellow reddit mod sent this to me for post approval on our sub and I found it interesting. Obviously this is one of those cases where you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place because the school didn’t actually have a facility for the child to use without leaving the building, so it’s not like she could’ve just gone down the hall.

Now, my questions:

1. Should the school have had a better plan in place for a child who may have needed the facilities during a lockdown besides a wastebasket/napkin situation?

2. Do you have any ideas on how the situation could’ve been better handled?

3. Has the student had a more severe type of bathroom emergency, should they have just been allowed to leave the premises with a staff member, or was this just an unfortunate case where there really wasn’t a better option available?

4. If you were a parent and this happened to your child, how would you feel? Understanding because it was a tough situation or would you have expected for there to be a much better protocol in place already for this?

5. What should the school do about the child now facing ridicule from the situation?

Etc. Feel free to contribute any other thoughts/opinions or create your own questions.

I personally feel that in a case like this there should at least be some kind of portable toilet ready or something so that there isn’t a weird wastebasket situation going on. My old boat came with a small potty for kids and I felt like that would’ve been perfect to have somewhere within the school so at least there was a “facility” of some sorts other than a wastebasket. Other than that I’m honestly not sure what else could’ve been done, but I can at the same time understand why the child felt humiliated/bullied over it And I feel bad that the child had to be in that kind of privacy situation. I do feel that the teacher was good for putting on music while it was happening— to me, that shows that she did put in some sort of intent to help out a sucky situation.
