Secondhand smoke around the baby

Ticia
Neither my husband or I smoke, but a lot of his family and our friends do. We are currently expecting our first baby in January, and I'm worried about secondhand smoke around our child. We get together with his family often, which is great because we are a very close family, they are wonderful people, and I love them a lot. But as an already protective mama and as a respiratory therapist, I know the dangers of smoking and secondhand smoke well, and of course want to sheld my little one as much as possible.
My husband and I are former social smokers, so I'm worried his family will think we're being hypocritical if we ask them to not smoke anywhere near the baby. Even if they don't smoke near the baby, smoke still lives on clothing, skin and in the air for a while, so I won't feel 100% comfortable with the situation. I also feel bad telling others what to do at their home and don't want to come off as judgemental.
I feel like it's a lose-lose situation, either I offend his family and look like a control freak mom, or my baby gets exposed to cigarette smoke.
Any suggestions on how to navigate through this sticky situation would be much appreciated!
