Should I be worried?

Ma

My son is turning 1 in a week and a half and the only word he says is “mama”. He usually says it when he sees me, but sometimes he says it when he sees my husband as well so I don’t think he fully understands what he’s saying. He babbles quite a bit, saying things like “gggeee geee”, “baa baa”, “uummmmm mmmm” etc, but never in reference to anything. He generally babbles when he’s playing alone, then when I try to talk to him he stops babbling.

He’s also not walking. He pulls himself up on everything and pushes his tall toys (his foam crawling tunnel, Leap Frog activity table, etc) around the room while taking assisted steps. He also steps from one piece of furniture to another, but only if he has his hand on a firm surface at all times. If I try to hold his hands to help him walk he just curls up his legs and tries to sit down or crawl.

I guess I just thought he’d be walking by the time he turned 1 and that he’d be saying at least a few words. I have an appointment with his pediatrician in about 3 weeks for his one-year checkup, but I wanted to check in with you ladies as well to see what your babies are doing. Is this something I should be worried about?
