Do you have to lose your mucus plug?

Question

Does everyone lose their mucus plug before going into labor on their own? I haven’t lost any part of it and I’ve been dilated and cramping for 2 weeks.

My doc told me that not everyone loses a “mucus plug.” She said it’s something they put in the text books and now everyone thinks it’s a thing. Kind of like “implantation bleeding” ... not everyone has that either.

I didn't with my first. I mean I guess it did when they broke my water but I never seen it

This is my 5th almost full term pregnancy and I have never seen or lost mucus plug.

I didn't lose mine until the night before I went into labor even though I'd been leaking for a week

My first my mucus plug was never lost and my water never broke until I was in the hospital I think my water broke at 8cm dilated. Assuming maybe the mucus plug came out then. I went into labor on my own though.

You may not have yet or maybe you didn't notice it when it came out. It can come out in pieces. Sometimes it stays in until you lose your water.
