Pacifiers?

Okay so this isn’t really pregnancy related, but it’s baby related. 
I want to try to avoid the pacifier phase if we can help it. But I’ve been reading that is lowers the chance of SIDS. There hasn’t been any scientific prof on why this is though. What do you guys think? I would rather just go through the pacifier phase if it meant my baby would be safer.

Well pacifiers are soothing to babies just like adults chew gum, bite their nails, or smoke when anxious that is how they self soothe. It isn't a bad thing like a lot of people make it seem. Pacifiers have evolved a lot and they dont cause damage to the palate or teeth like they did in the past before 2 years of age. 
They do reduce the risk of SIDS because they're subconsciously sucking while asleep and it keeps them from falling to deeply asleep. 
Sometimes if you breastfeed, your baby will try and use you as a pacifier and they're necessary. 
Also just because you skip them doesn't mean they won't find other ways to soothe like sucking their thumb.

I read recently that pacifiers reduce the risk of SIDS because focusing on the sucking motion of the pacifier puts your child in a lighter sleep, making them more alert. I'm not sure what the scientific background on this is either, but curious to see if anyone else knows.

My baby went without and did fine. Plus, she wasn't a fan of to begin with so it saved some hassle.

My son never wanted one but he was offered one.. in the NICU they didn't give an option if I wanted him to have one or not(we did want him to be offered one so I guess we lucked out on that) but my main reasons were it reducing SIDS and I 110% do not want a finger sucker! 🤢 so baby girl who will be here Friday if she doesn't come before will also be offered a pacifier.

We never gave my daughter a pacifier and she's fine 🤷 there is always risk no matter what you do so if there isn't sufficient evidence that you feel it actually helps I would put more weight in your other reasons for not wanting to use a pacifier.
