You can only get pregnant when you ovulate. 
That said, sperm live approximately 3 days, maximum 5. So if you have sex unprotected 5 days before ovulation you have a chance of getting pregnant. The closer to ovulation the higher the chance. 
When you ovulate the egg only lives for 24-36 hours. If sperm fertilizes the egg, it takes 6-12 days to implant and to get a positive pregnancy test. Some people’s HCG hormone rises more slowly than others and it may take more time to show on a pregnancy test. 
To track your ovulation you should use an app to determine your usual cycle. That will give you a rough estimate of when you ovulate. In addition, check your discharge/cervical mucus to find when it shows your fertile. Fertile mucus looks and feels like egg-whites. You can also purchase OPKs which you show your LH levels as the rise during your cycle. LH peaks right before ovulation. To confirm ovulation some people use BBT (nasal body temperature) monitoring; to do this you take your temperature with a BBT thermometer every morning immediately when you wake. Over time you establish your baseline and then you’ll see a dip when you ovulate and then a  a continuous rise over 4 days after the dip.

You can get pregnant from having sex anytime. But the fertilization happens when your egg releases. However sperm can live inside you for up to 5 days. And your egg will like 24-48 hours after it releases. You will know when you’re about to ovulate when you have an egg white textured mucus. In some women they feel light cramps when they ovulate.
