Build your own home or buy one?

Question

What’s cheaper? Building your own home or just buying one. My partner and I are currently discussing this. He’d rather buy one and just have it as it is, not have to do much work to it, etc.. Basically just buy it, move on & done. On the other hand, I rather built my own home since it would be our forever home. I want to be part of the building process, make it the way we like. I want my marble kitchen counter tops, my bathroom with a standing shower and a tub on the side, etc .. 😁 Not buy a house that’s somewhat close to what we would want and later on down the road make changes to it.. Obviously both are expensive but what would you guys prefer? Buy a house as it is and work on it down the road or built your own the way you like it from the start?

Building is more expensive, but more beneficial in the long run if it's done right. You inherit all a house's problems when you buy, HVAC and furnaces, things like that which need replacing and will cost in the thousands. I was literally just looking at the pros and cons list this morning since we're being the process of searching for a longterm home.

Buying is cheaper. If you buy in a development you have to pay for any upgrades and marble countertops are typically one. I’ve also found they nickel and dime you for everything. If you buy a plot of land and build, it’s still more expensive but that’s because you have to remember about buying things you wouldn’t think of. IE blinds for all windows, toilet paper holders (if they don’t have them involved), etc. Our first home is a home in a development that was built three years ago. We are the second owners so they paid for all of the blinds and little things. Our next forever home will be a custom built home on a plot of land we buy.

One thing to keep in mind about building in an edition is that it will be noisy during the day, due to houses being built around you. So if you will be home during the day it’s hardly quiet. I had my house built over 2 years ago and it’s still noisy during the day. They are finally almost done with all the houses on my street but dragging their feet on a few of them with finishing up. 
I only work from home a few days a month so it’s not a huge deal but, looking back I would have rather taken more time to find a used home in good condition as I also agree that route would have been less costly overall.

In Texas buying was cheaper by close to 30,000. We were looking at building but the lot we wanted was not longer available. 
We ended up getting a 5 yr old house, with appliances, more square footage and a finished yard for 30,000 less.
My husband calls our house a starter home but I sure hope not! My babies are growing up here 💕

I’m probably too indecisive to build a home. Having to select each detail would be difficult. But then I keep seeing the same type of house for sale and it’s not what we like. 
Even people who build homes though don’t have them perfect. My cousins (a construction manager and an electrician) built theirs, and there was a fair amount they would go back and change. Not sure there is a truly perfect home :)

I want to buy a fixer upper. That’s what my boyfriend and I plan on doing in the next couple years.
