Nipple shield - supposed to stop using?

Question

Are you supposed to stop using the nipple shield at some point?   I have flat nipples so Baby couldnt larch.  Was I supposed to be trying and teaching him to? So that I would stop using the shield?
He will be 2 months old already 😢 in 2 days and is starting to fuss more with the shield when I’m trying to nurse..  I want to continue nursing as long as I can but I don’t want him frustrated

I’ve had to use it for 14 weeks and still going. I saw lactation consultants earlier and they gave some strategies to try wean her off the shield but none have worked. She’s too used to the size and feel of the shield. There’s nothing wrong with continuing to use them if you need to, it’s just annoying.

It was recommended to me by a LC to either offer the breast first or latch them with the shield and then halfway through feeding take it off and try to get her to latch without. You could also pump for a few min beforehand to get the nipple pulled out. Our girl is 4 weeks on Monday and I’m still using it, but we’re trying to wean her off. We’re still learning how to latch without it 😊
