Asking for a promise ring?

So my boyfriend and I will have been together for 4 years in May next year
We have owned our own home together since 2016
We've talked about getting married and he said that yes he does want to, just not yet
I agree that we aren't really in a position to do so yet
He asked me what I want for Christmas and there really isn't anything I want, but it popped into my head tonight that I really would love to have a promise ring
Do you all think that is a weird question to ask him?

I asked my husband for a promise ring when I was pregnant with our son. He had proposed to me (didn’t have a ring) and I said yes but we didn’t want it to be official or get married while I was pregnant. We didn’t want everyone to think we were only engaged and/or getting married because I got pregnant, so we went with a promise ring instead.

I don’t think it would be weird at all. You have a home together and been together for 4 years. It’s very a appropriate gift to ask for.

I don't understand the concept of a promise ring. If you already wear a ring on your finger when they propose it isn't like a new special thing. I loved the feeling of a foreign thing on my finger when we got engaged. It symbolized all the change to come.
