Cereal???

Question

My son’s pediatrician told us to give him cereal when he turns 5 months old. I’m FTM!! Please give me tips/advice how to feed him cereal? Do I feed him rice cereal or oatmeal? He is on formula right now. So should I mix with just water or mix with formula? How thick it should be? How often should I feed him through out the day?

My sons doctor said to do oatmeal and start thin (but not straight water) so he can get the consistency thing down and work on using his tongue.  Too watery and it’ll drip down the back of his throat (he won’t choke, it’s just not a great feeling).  Then thicken it up as he gets more successful.  All trial and error, but I only made a tablespoon at a time - a little water goes a LONG way

Rice cereal works great to mix with formula for babies that have reflux and stuff like that, but it’s empty calories and the texture isn’t necessarily the same as the oatmeal so if you’re giving to him separately from his formula I would say do the oatmeal. If you mix it in with the formula it could do. But the oatmeal would likely give him more practice eating with the different textures and give him more nutrients than the rice. Good luck 💕

We were told to use plain rice cereal, nothing flavored. The easiest way we found giving it to my son was just a syringe you get out a baby tylenol box. I'd get a bowl ready, put rice cereal than formula and add water. Read the instructions for the measurements.
