if i have sex a day before my period will i get pregnant?

I want to have sex with my boyfriend I have been with him for six months but never had intercourse . me and my boyfriend have just about everything to prevent pregnany. what should I use to really prevent pregnancy? is it perfectly safe to have sex the day before your period? I wanna make sure I'm not ovulating when I have sex. any tips on what to use to prevent pregnancy?
