Has anyone had a hoarder in their life ?

My MIL is so fortunate to have a 2 bedroom apartment for a pretty affordable price (I live In Reno, and rent here is astronomical) 
But we never can stay over there and hang out because she’s a hoarder. She’s not gross to the point of like trash and stuff, but pretty bad where there’s no space to walk around and there’s an entire room full of stuff. 
She just keeps buying more useless stuff. My husband is finally starting to get bothered by it to the point he doesn’t even want to go over and visit with her. I don’t even get out of the car when we stop by to pick something up because I can’t stand being there. 
Has anyone had a hoarding family member and had success getting them to clean up ? I’m tempted to offer to pay for a storage unit so we can move the stuff she can’t part with.
I don’t want my baby there because the air quality has to be so bad because of all the dust and mildew that gets collected under all the stuff! But I don’t have the heart to tell her she can’t see the baby :(

My hubby is a bit of a pack rat. Mostly for broken things... he sets them aside to be fixed or repurposed at a (much) later date (just like his grandpa). I find myself throwing them away when he isn't looking😂. And rope. He has a thing for rope because we are always hauling something that will need to be tied down, and he is the guy who has rope if anybody needs it🤦🏻‍♀️

My problem is that I get so attached to some stuff and it’s hard to part with it so I end up havinga bunch of stuff I don’t need :/

I wouldn’t call my mom a hoarder, but she definitely hangs on to useless stuff for way too long and she fills up all the space she has just because she can. She can’t seem to stop thinking WHAT IF she needs something and doesn’t listen when I tell her that IF she does need certain things she can buy them at the time. I also think she doesn’t want to send stuff to the dump that could be used by someone less fortunate, but she just doesn’t know where or how to donate those things.. It’s not gross at her place at all and I’m not worried about baby going over there, but it drives me crazy because she has no reason to hang on to most of it at all. And when I mentioned this to her one time, she blamed me because I am storing TWO boxes in her basement and some clothes in the closet in my old bedroom. That is all in a four bedroom home with a basement and large crawl space!! Sigh. Thanks for letting me vent. This is a topic that irritates me.

My FIL is a Hoarder to the extreme. My Husband and his friends have helped him clear up with massive skip bins on 3 occasions now and he just reverts to his old habits. The last time we were actually allowed into his house was Christmas 2014 so I don’t even want to imagine how bad it is now, it smelt so bad then!!. We are only ever allowed to stand on the drive way when we visit. He has been told that when our baby arrives we won’t be visiting unless he has cleaned up his house and hubby is happy with it (no progress so far and I’m now 34 weeks). My husband is at a loss in how to help him now as it financially costs a bundle each time he does. I would not be offering to pay for storage... it will just allow for more space in the house to buy/find more stuff.
