Will it mess with my milk supply?

I tried and it didn’t work for me. Baby didn’t like the taste of my milk on keto (I’m guessing it may not have been as sweet as normal?) and my supply dropped (I pump so I know how much I produce normally). I’m looking to start again when I wean.

Make sure you are getting enough calories. You burn an extra 500 calories a day just from breastfeeding. Adequate calorie and water intake is crucial, otherwise your supply will drop. Or worse, you’ll pass out or harm yourself. I’ve seen it happen to a breastfeeding/pumping mom who wasn’t eating and drinking enough.

Keto is great for breast feeding. Milk is almost completely fat anyway, so keto will make your supply even more dense for baby. Ask your doc if he/she thinks you need to modify anything, and keep in mind that no relevant studies have been done on pregnant/breastfeeding women in ketosis. Sometimes doctors use a study on rats in keto-acidosis (which is a starvation state) to discourage women from the keto diet (which is a natural state). That study has been widely discredited. Sadly, many docs still refer to it when answering questions about keto.
