Whats important is that it is calm, controlled, and measured.  Never out of anger.  That goes for any discipline.
I was spanked as a child and developed a strong case of respect for my elders.

My 7 year old ass disagrees cause it had a bruise from the top of the left cheek all the way across to the bottom of the right cheek.... And dhs had to take a picture of it to document it to make sure the stupid cunt who gave me that bruise wouldn't get away with it

I was spanked in a way that was not abusive but I still developed a severe case of anxiety and fear of adults. I still catch myself responding in fear to this day. My parents did it calm and controlled as well, not in a fit of rage but that did not matter. Completely outside of my firm opinion that no child should be hit as a punishment, the fact of the matter is just that not all children respond well to that type of discipline. There is always another way to work things out. It’s really not black and white.

Hitting a child by hand/object is where the line becomes blurred between abusive and disciplinary, so I would rather not.

I think a spanking with the hand is necessary sometimes but I would never hit my child with an object. 
One time my moms friend was babysitting me and my 2 older siblings. She kept wanting to play with me. She would brush my hair and braid it and then undo it and braid it again. Over and over. I finally told her no and go up to walk away. I didn't want anyone but my mom to touch my hair anyway. I was about 5 or 6. She got mad and told me to sit down and I went to walk away. So she chases me into her bedroom and then spanks me with a belt. I didn't tell my mom until I was older. She said if she would have known she would have handled that lady.
I was scarred from that. I flinch whenever my boyfriend takes off his belt even though he would NEVER strike me. It scares me. 
I will spank my child if they do something dangerous or irresponsible if I feel it needs to go to that level but an object will never touch my child's butt in that manner.
