Crib or pack n play?

Question

Our baby will be in our bedroom until we are able to move into a larger home. My question is, since she likely won’t transition out of our room for a long time, do I need to have her in a bassinet or pack n play at first or can a newborn sleep in the crib since it will be in the same room?

Newborns can be in cribs as soon as they are born, most people just use bassinets to keep them close at night for the first few weeks but a lot of parents chose to put them straight into a crib. Either way is fine :)

My baby will be in my room for a good while. I have anxiety and I want to be able to check on the baby easily. My nephew passed away at 5 months due to SIDS so it makes my worry even worse. I'm going to be using a bassinet that hold up to 40 pounds. Some chose not to get some bassinets because the weight limits are low. Just look for some that hold more weight and good quality.

My baby girl just turned a year old and has been sharing our room with us since she was born. It is actually recommended that baby’s share a room with their parents until a year old. It’s not really a big deal though as some parents are comfortable having them sleep in their own room. It was easier for me to breastfeed with her close to me. Anyway...she has been in a pack n play the whole time and has done just fine. I put her in a crib for a little bit and once she got her leg stuck and wasn’t able to turn over. Luckily I caught it and got her out. From then on I kept her in a pack n play because it just seemed like the better option for us. You’ll know what’s right for your baby! Good luck!!

My 16 month old started in a rock n play and is still currently in a pack n play. He’s still in our room until about March then he’ll go to a toddler bed in his own room. A pack n play is just as fine as a crib so depending on your space in your room I would go off that.

It's really just a matter of personal preference; though I've heard in your room in general is safer for SIDS. With my first, he slept in his pack n play bassinet until he was only waking twice per night (around 4-5months old). Of course we hit all the usual sleep regressions of waking a ton at different milestones and teething stages, but I kept him in his room through them since he was already well adjusted to his own room and crib. I kept him in our room mostly for my own sanity through those early constant feeding stages 😆 You can definitely use the pack n play as a bed longer though by switching to laying in the bottom of it rather than hooked on bassinet. Luckily he is already well adjusted to his toddler bed since around 1year old so I don't have to worry about 'stealing' his crib or buying a second one for the new baby. I plan on trying the same thing I did before with baby #2 and letting them each have their own room until the younger one is around the level my first son is at now--consistently good bedtime routine, sleeping through the night, and already transitioned to a toddler bed.

We loved our rock and play! My daughter had colic when she was first born and refused to sleep laying flat because her belly hurt. The rock and play let her be elevated enough that she slept great.

For my other 2 children, (I will be using it again for my baby coming in May 2019) I used the - graco travel lite crib with stages manor. It is half the size of a regular playpen. My bedroom is on the first floor and children's room is upstairs. I was able to keep my children in my room till they were 1 year old and sleeping thru the night. It has 3 different heights with a bassinet size being one of them. I loved it!

Skip right to the crib, bassinets are such a waste of money! They grow out of them so fast and unless you can get one from a friend or used ( just clean it, no biggie) I wouldn't bother with it. They're cute and easy to mobe around but honestly it's more of a luxury item than a necessity.
