How does drug testing at work go?

Hey ladies! I had a question i hope you would be able to shed some light on. I’m getting my first job in the states since moving from Canada 4 years ago. 
As I’ve been applying I’ve seen a lot of questions if I am willing to take a drug test. I have no problem doing so but how do they go about doing it? Is it a blood or urine sample? I’ve never been drug tested for any jobs in Canada, even working as a phlebotomist in a general hospital, like I said early I’m not worried about passing imjust curious how the process goes!

Usually either a urine sample or they just swab the mouth

I’ve worked at many hospitals! For me it’s always been a urine test. If that’s positive then they would either exclude you from hiring immediately or do a follow up blood test. 
Getting the urine is nothing crazy but the actual collection is quite regulated with dye in the toilet, no personal belongings, and a quick pat down I believe. Just to ensure you’re not bringing someone else’s urine along to switch out lol

It’s usually just a simple urine collection, typically with some precautions to prevent people bringing fake urine, or someone else’s. There are a very few amount of places that will do hair tests, but that’s usually only in safety sensitive positions, and most often that will be stated on the application or drug testing consent form.

This totally caught me off guard too when I moved from Canada. One place even required a “medical evaluation” which I was thinking was like a full on physical exam and I thought it was insane an employer could ask this. Turns out it was just a quick hearing check and eye exam plus a urine sample to drug test. I guess it’s super common here. 
I’ve never had to do a drug test before so it was really strange. You can’t take a purse or any belongings or anything into the bathroom with you (I guess so you can’t sneak in a clean sample), and I also wasn’t allowed to wash my hands until I gave them my urine sample. I’m not sure if that how all drug testing is done but I found it all so strange.

It will depend on the company if they do a urine or hair sample. When you get your offer they will give you the lab to go to and you will only have a certain amount of days to get it completed.
