How long are we expected to stay in hospital post birth?

I was just reading another post about what to expect from a hospital room during delivery and it got me thinking about post birth expectations.

I am planning on giving birth at UCLH (London nhs hospital) and I haven’t yet had a visit to the birthing area. However, I kind of thought I would be going home pretty soon after giving birth if there were no complications. What is a reasonable expectation about length of time spent in hospital after birth?

I am an incredibly private person and can’t think of anything worse than sharing a room with a stranger or strangers after such a momentous occasion. (I am the kind of person who will book an extra room rather than share with my closest friends on holiday - weird I know!).

That being said I want to make sure both I and, most importantly, my Little Madam are healthy and ready to go home before being discharged. Also, I would like to get all the help I can with e.g breastfeeding.
