Why BMI bothers me (RANT WARNING)

Posting this to prove a point, because I am so incredibly tired of people throwing BMI in each other’s faces. Calling someone obese based on BMI alone is absolute crap.

At pre pregnancy, I was 5’3 and weighed 185 pounds. According to BMI, I was obese. I’m sorry, but no matter how crappy I’ve felt about my body, I have never ever felt that I looked obese. Fast forward to now, I’m 32 weeks, and weigh 189. I’ve only gained 4 pounds.

Even at 31-32 weeks, I’d say I still don’t look obese. This is why it bothers me so much when BMI is used to calculate health.

I just read a comment on another post in which a girl was asking how much weight she needed to lose to get pregnant. Based on the weight and height she provided, someone thought it was a good idea to tell her she’s obese and would need to lose a lot.

It was completely uncalled for. I understand that being healthy is important, but BMI doesn’t always prove whether or not you’re healthy. BMI may say I’m obese, but I exercise regularly, eat well, and have no known health issues. I’m just so sick of people pretending they know everything and putting others down.
