Speech therapist???

My 9 month old daughter doesn't say any words or sounds of words like ma, da, or ga. Just like hums. So my doctor said to take her to a speech therapist. Anyone else in the same boat or concerned?? First time mom so not really sure?! Thanks!! 💖💖

At 9 months they suggested speech therapy? That's pretty early to be suggesting it. Doctors don't usually recommend it until around 18 months to 2yrs. Lots of kids don't start speaking until a 1.5yr or older.

Call your school district. They provide evaluations for free and will let you know what is appropriate for that age.

It wouldn’t hurt to get her seen by a specialist. A speech therapist would probably give you activities to work on at home and what to look for as far as what’s developmentally appropriate so you don’t worry too much.

She is now 10months and can try to repeat me some time.

My daughter is 10 months and just started saying “ba” for “bath” and she says dada all the time and has said baba and Gaga but she didn’t even start saying those simple words until like 9-9.5 months. Speech therapy at 9 months seems young but maybe you could go once and see what they say and it would put your mind at ease and then you wouldn’t feel later like “what if I took them when the doc said to”. But seems young to be too concerned.

Lots should be happening between now and 12 months, as far as speech is concerned. Give her some more time. In the meantime, just ensure she is reacting and responding to your voice (to ensure her hearing is where it should be). Just keep talking to her and read!!! Read every day, this is so important!!!! If you feel like she hasn’t progressed in the next couple of months, then maybe you would want to talk to a professional.

She may be behind a bit but I’m not entirely sure what the average is by month 9. I know my son was saying sounds like ma, da, ba, etc but he was also walking by 9 months. She’s absolutely adorable, hopefully all is well.
