A pedophile thrives off of doing what’s wrongs. It’s not because of a hormone imbalances or being born that way.

Pedophilia is a sexual orientation, just as someone being straight, gay, or bisexual. The only difference is that it is illegal (for obvious and good reasons). The fact that it is illegal and is a sexual orientation towards individuals that cannot consent and are not sexually mature, is why it is a disorder. So yes, being in the mental health field, I think it is a mental condition and people don’t choose to have the desire to be attracted to children. They don’t usually want to harm children and are often very distressed by their sexual desires. Usually when an individual is sexually abusing a child FOR the purpose of harming them, there’s a different issue going on and it’s related to power dynamic and control, not pedophilia. And as long as they aren’t committing any acts against children, I could care less about someone’s sexual orientation. If they aren’t harming anyone or acting on it, it’s not my place to judge. With that being said, just because someone has pedophilia, doesn’t make it okay or an excuse to sexually abuse or take advantage of a child. Never ever is that okay, and I wouldn’t feel bad for a sex offender just because it’s a mental disorder.

If its a mental disorder then it wouldnt be so prevelent throughout history, both animal and human, and it would have to have enough criteria to form a diagnosis, and making it a mental disorder not only opens the door to calling homosexuality or any "other" form of sexuality a disorder. Also, it does not have any known "cures" or treatments, and I'm sorry but thinking about hurting yourself or others is a symptom of many mental disorders and paedophilia is a sex crime and we as a society know that to act on those thoughts is to harm someone. Could be an underlying symptom of something bigger and therefore manageable and punishable.
