Mirena AND the pill for bleeding?

I’ve had mirena for 7 months now and I STILL have breakthrough bleeding that has only lessened a little. I’m wondering if I can talk to my DR about putting me on the pill as well as the IUD to help with this? If I do, how long do I have to take the pill before it should even out?

I had a friend who was on both the pill and Mirena, so some doctors WILL prescribe both. I don’t know if this is common practice, but I do know someone who was on both meds. 
That being said, I don’t know if a doctor will prescribe the pill JUST to lighten bleeding with Mirena. My friend was on both meds for other medical reasons, so I can’t help with that aspect of your particular situation. 
I can say, from both my personal experience as well as talking with my doctor, it can take up to 12 months for Mirena to stop or significantly lighten your period. The first year your body could still be adjusting. Some people have periods stop after only 1 month, but some people have periods stop after 10 months. So just because you haven’t stopped bleeding at 7 months, doesn’t necessarily mean that will continue to be the case.
