I think the IUD was the cause of my autoimmune disease..

Background: Had a baby Apr 2017 & had the paragard IUD put in June 2017. I had 0 health issues up to this point. Around Aug 2017, I started getting really anxious (especially at night), I was having tremors, heart palpitations, I felt sick to my stomach all the time, my hair was falling out (a lot), I was fatigued all the time, I would have muscle weakness at times, dry itchy skin, etc.

I went to the Dr in Aug searching for answers. I rattled off my list of ridiculous symptoms & she told me I have anxiety & prescribed be Zoloft. I never took it & went back for a 2nd opinion with the other Dr after doing some research about my symptoms. It turned out I was right & after lots of testing I learned that I had developed Hashimoto's, and autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid.

Many months later, I read an article about how putting metals in your body can cause horrible reactions to organs like your thyroid. My paragard IUD is copper. I also found just a few forums of other women in similar situations that ended up having thyroid issues after IUD insertions & are wondering if they are related.

I'm not sure so sure that I wouldn't have ever had a thyroid issue without having the copper IUD. But I'm wondering if it threw my thyroid completely out of swing when it was inserted.

Do the hard work. Do as much research as you can about products before saying yes to them.

Also, as a rule of thumb, it just doesn't seem good for your body to put metals in your body. But I also don't think it's good to put other birth control options into your body either.

[I know there are a lot of women out their who say that birth control is less about keeping from becoming pregnant, & more about leveling out their acne or weight management, etc. But I think we should explore other options. Maybe your body is trying to tell you something. Maybe you're low on progesterone or are anemic. Let's keep our bodies healthy ladies. I know birth control is a touchy subject, but I just don't want this happening to anyone else.]
