My Birth Story

I finally had my baby boy on 14th January 2019 at 41&2 weeks pregnant.

On the 13th January I had a nice bath and when I got out I was sick (which was unusual) but I thought nothing more of it. I started having some tightenings but nothing to really call anything and they didn’t hurt - so I decided to get some sleep. It was super windy outside so my other two children came and slept in bed with me as the noises were scaring them.

Around 11:15pm I was fast asleep and I felt wetness up my back. My first thought was that one of the kids had peed in my bed (not something they’d usually do) so I jumped up then realised this “pee” was coming from me and wouldn’t stop. There was loads of it. I realised quickly it was my water breaking.

It was clear fluid so I decided to get on my birthing ball and bounce around for a bit to see if it fetched on contractions. I started having pains but nothing really regular. Then I went to the toilet and checked on the water loss because it was still oozing out. The pad that is put on had turned greeny/yellow so I phoned the labour suite and they told me to come in to be monitored.

They confirmed that my little boy had pood inside me and needed to get my contractions started to get him out. So they hooked me up to a drip to get the contractions going around 2am.

I was progressing well and didn’t feel the need for any pain relief at this point. Around 5am the pains started getting worse and around 6am I had to accept the gas and air.

The contractions were coming thick and fast and were really intense I asked for pain relief but they said no because they didn’t know how fast I’d deliver because I’d picked up quite immensely.

So just on gas and air and about 7cm I felt the urge to push. No amount of being told not to was stopping it so the midwife just told me to go with it.

I had lost all track of time by this point. But they told me they could see his head so to keep pushing. I finally delivered his head and they told me to keep pushing to get his shoulders out. But the contractions had pretty much stopped and I had no push left in me. Before I knew it someone had pressed the emergency button and loads of midwives ran in and threw my legs behind my head and said he’s stuck so we need you to give an almighty push and they were pulling him.

They finally got him out at 7:47am and swept him away as he wasn’t breathing For what seemed like an eternity but they finally got him breathing. 💙

he weighed a whopping 9lb 14&1/2oz and I delivered him with just gas and air. I had a first degree tear internally and he had shoulder dystocia. But other than that no issues. They just wanted to keep an eye on him for 12 hours in case he’d ingested any meconium. Luckily he’d not.
