Spotting during pregnancy?

Im not quite sure where I am but I'm having a little to medium amount of red and brown blood. Is this common or should I be concerned?

I've had brown spotting and went to the hospital freaked out.  Brown blood is is old blood and they said I shouldn't worry unless it became a heavy blood flow and red or pink in color
