Birth Story *long
I always ready everyone birth stories and while I was pregnant I really enjoyed the long and detailed ones so here’s mine!
5:50am on January 18th I felt two little “gushes” and woke up to change my underwear and put on a pad. I crawled back into bed thinking I had just peed myself a little bit. 30 min later I got up to go pee and needed to change the pad I had put on, I laid back down but couldn’t sleep so I went and sat on the couch and had a small breakfast (bagel, yogurt, and some juice). I felt some more wetness come out so I went and jumped in the shower, after my shower I woke my boyfriend up (7:30am) and told him my water had broken so he could get up and get ready to go.
By 9:30/10am we got to the hospital and had confirmed I had broken my water. I got my first dose of penicillin (I am GBS positive). I had no contractions all day that I could feel. The occasional crampy twinge but that’s it! 9pm they finally gave me my private room (apparently it was the busiest day the L&D has seen in close to 10 years), and I was started on something to kick start my contractions (Synto).
The first hour or two I slept, then it started to get interesting. My contractions started to actually feel like something around 1:30am and I had sent my boyfriend home at 9:30pm so he could sleep (he’s 6’9” so the hospital cots for support partners are so not big enough), so I called him to come back. He got back at around 2, just in time for me to practice breathing and get a dose of fentanyl because the contractions were getting very painful. I started getting the epidural (I was around a 4 dilated) at 4:30/5am, they had to give me a dose of fentanyl because I was shaking so violently through the contractions. By the time they had the epidural in place I was feeling the need to push and it hadn’t even kicked in yet. At 6:05 I began pushing and 14 minutes later, at 6:19am she made her appearance.
Apparently I pushed for very short amount of time for a first time mom. I needed an episiotomy because her heart rate was dipping with every contraction/push. I’m not sure how many stitches I got but it certainly hurts a hell of a lot today.
She’s a sweetheart, she barely cries and she latches really well on both breasts. My day nurse today was rude and told me that because I have implants I likely wouldn’t be able to breastfeed properly but she certainly is being proved wrong. Baby girl slept really well last night so I finally got more than an hour of sleep.
