Is it ok to pump before baby gets here to help milk production?

I'm more interested in having my milk come in than jump starting labor. I want to do this at 38 weeks but I've read conflicting information. Not sure if it will really help my milk or mess it up.

Your milk will not come until baby arrives. Anything before that is going to be colostrum. It can take 24 hours to a few days after birth for your actual milk to begin. You also shouldn't pump early because it might really induce you.

Your body won’t signal you to make milk until after the placenta is delivered. Which is why mature milk comes in a few days after delivery. If you pump now you’ll get colostrum only but your body will continue to make more until the milk comes in.

It won’t help your milk at all. Colostrum is the first food that baby has and it needs this! Colostrum is very important and it sustains baby for the first few days. Milk generally comes in around day 3 or 4 and it’s supposed to be that way. There is no need to worry or hurry your milk up. You can hand express colostrum into syringes and freeze it to have on hand in case baby has low blood sugar or jaundice at birth then they can give it straight away but otherwise putting baby straight on the boob after being born is plenty. You’re more likely to just end up with sore boobies if you pump this early!

I have GD and have been told to start hand expressing colostrum from 36 weeks to freeze and have incase my son has low sugars when he's born. Colostrum is considered liquid gold so the more you give baby the better off they'll be so having a stash of it will help. Expressing now wont help your milk production through, your milk wont come in until your body signals it to.

Your baby only needs a small amount of colostrum those first few days and that’s all you would get right now. Your milk won’t come in until baby is born. It’s not going to hurt anything per say but there’s no reason to do it. And pumping in the early days (if you are also nursing) can cause an oversupply which sounds like a good thing but isn’t!

Fresh colostrum is so good for your baby.. I would suggest to ask your dr or just wait until you give birth.. Just make sure you're drinking a lot of water
