How effective is premarital counseling?

we went and really felt we got alot out of it.  they taught us to argue, to apologize, to forgive.  They made my now husband understand that if something upset him he needed to tell me, even if that meant a dight, because letting things build was very unhealthy.
I think it greatly depends on how open you are to taking their advice.

I was engaged several years ago and premarital counseling helped me realize I was actually NOT ready to get married and that I was NOT sure about wanting to be with my fiancé "till death do us part."
I would still say it's effective because it helped me to seek out what was right for me and whether I had what it takes to be in a marriage. I've been single/dating for six years now. I know myself so much better now, and I'm very happy with my life choices.

Did it with my first husband, didn't stop him from doing bad things, didn't do it with my second marriage and we are quite happy.

Depends on where and who you get the counseling from and whether or not you are both open to it.  Great book to read before getting married is  real marriage, the truth about sex friendship and life together by Mark Driscoll.  My husband and I both read and enjoyed it as well as went to pre marital counseling.
