Preterm labor maybe not really just joking mom!
On Monday I had an eventful day with my youngest 1.5 years old. He decided to fall face first into my headboard on my bed and put his tooth through his lip. Ugh!! So off to urgent care with all three of my kids because it was a holiday and my husband signed up to work for it.
So anyways, I'm home relaxing with them and everything is fine. My little one is fine my husband makes it home I take a relaxing bath. I'm even saying screw the house work and laying around playing on my tablet.
I start to notice that I'm having contractions. This is my fourth time thru so I ignored it at first thinking they will go away I'm only 33+6. I get up finally and start making dinner at which time I'm like OK I'll time them so I can tell myself I'm being paranoid and get over it.
Well shit they are coming on average every three minutes and so my paranoia jumps a little. I eat and my husband fusses at me and tells me to get in touch with my midwife. So I text her and ask at what point should I be concerned and blah blah blah. When she answers my stomach drops I just know this is going to be a long night. She tells me I'm only basically 34 weeks and if I'm having more than 4 an hour I need to go to the hospital now. That I'll get fluids and possible steroids for his lungs and so on.
Time to load everyone up and head to the hospital. My husband can't come back because he's got the kids and so I'm strapped in to be monitored and sure enough every three minutes I'm having contractions.
They didn't want to do a vaginal exam but after they monitor me for a while they check my cervix which was close (yippee). I stay on the monitor and they keep coming. I get fluids and after a while they start getting more painful and my discomfort is growing at this point I mean I've been doing this for hours now. So they decide to check my again and do a swab for group b and preterm labor. My cervix had changed to a 1. And the water works begin as I'm not scared this is really going to happen.
They decide to give me pain medicine and see if that helps relax me into stopping. I knock out and they don't stop. When I get back up my midwife is there delivering another baby and after talking to the MFM doctor she practices with they decide to give me a second round of IV pain medicine. I wake up from that and the pain is worse and in my bag to boot.
After all this they admit me and start the steroid injections (two at twenty four hours apart) and try to stop the contractions. They give me antibiotics (which made my hands where they had my IVs at make me want to cut my hand off, it fudging hurt) they gave me fluids they sent for ultrasounds and monitored me like crazy.
After the antibiotic was given my contractions stopped thank God for his heavenly graces. They move me to postpartum for monitoring and my second set of steroids. I'm hopefully going home in the next few hours but man was that stressful and scary.
If you think something is going on don't be scared to call and be reassured if don't actually just go in to be checked. I'm not sure if they would have stopped on their own but it really wouldn't have been with the risk of waiting to see.
