Ignorant parents?

Question

Does anyone get very annoyed when you try to have an informative conversation with someone and they always get offended and act irritated towards you?
Whenever I have a conversation with my parents and I say something informative they act like what I'm saying is a direct insult to them or something.
For example; I was talking with my mother about what we will be using to keep the baby warm as he will be born in -30 weather, she said, "just put him in a snowsuit." And I said, "it's actually dangerous to put a baby or any child into a car seat while wearing a snowsuit." I then went on to try to explain to her why it was dangerous.
She then gave me a side ways look and said, "well I put all of you in snowsuits and you're fine."
I said, "Yes, but things were different then, we have more information now and more reliable studies to go off of."
She then replied, "I don't know, I think it would be worse for the baby to freeze." 
I said, "He won't freeze, he will be wearing warm clothes, blankets and a fleece canopy overtop of the car seat,   Having something inbetween the baby and the straps or car seat just isn't safe."
I then proceeded to try and show her the car seat regulations and safety from my phone, and she just looked away and ignored me. 
This is how every conversation is with my parents when I say something informative, I always feel like because I'm younger than them they get offended when I speak intelligently, like, "how dare you tell me I'm wrong"
Is this just ignorance?!

No, it's not ignorance. What it is, is your mom hearing that what she did for you wasn't good enough and that you're going to be a better mom than her. I know that's not what you're intending to say to her, but when you point out the things your mom did wrong because 'she didn't know better' you're unintentionally insulting her. It's something a lot of young moms do when they're full of knowledge about the 'best' way to do things, and they don't mean to and don't realize they are. Try to keep this in mind, what I know today to be 'best', is not what I was told and what the research showed to be 'best' when my oldest (who is 12) was an infant. And, as unbelievable as it may seem now with all the research and proof that we have, what we're doing with our kids will most likely be considered foolish and dangerous when our grandkids are born. So while you're on here posting about how ignorant your mom is acting, she's thinking of all the 'right' techniques she's seen come and go since you were a newborn and trying to bite her tongue and allow you to be 'right' and not burst your protective new mommy bubble.

My in-laws got super offended when I wouldn't use the crib that had been in the family for 70 years. My father-in-law slept in it, his siblings, and all the children. It has a drop down side and the bars were super far apart. They kept telling us kind of the same thing as your mom. That no one in their family died sleeping in that crib. I kept thinking that if my baby died because I let her sleep in that crib just to avoid offending my in-laws, I would never forgive myself. So needless to say, we never took that ancient crib.

Yes! Tons of older people always tell me to put cereal in my son's bottle or that they feed them cereal at 2 weeks. This was the 70's and 80's, not now. Back when car seats weren't used in cars. They even convince my husband is okay

I have ignorant in-laws! I mentioned painting the nursery in gender neutral colors because if we have a second of the opposite gender, they will still be sharing a room for a while and I'm not a fan of blue or pink anyway. I was told that gender neutral colors makes kids gay! Oh I fired back with a vengeance. I majored in psychology and actually did projects on homosexuality because I felt the need to enlighten people on it. I finally just ended it with "well if my child is gay, I will still love them just as much," since they're ignorance can't be argued with.

I followed my mother's advice a lot when it came to my boys!! They wore snow suits in their car seats, they got cereal at a pretty young age, and they've taken a beating from their siblings lol (they are almost 5 & 7) and they survived...my youngest would not sleep on his stomach no matter what, he wouldn't do it...so he slept on his back!! He still only sleeps on his side or back never his stomach!! There is always going to be a "safer" way to do something when it comes to parenting. My mom has 3 girls all in their mid-late 20s so I think I can trust her advice!!

My mom does the same thing but then just looks at me giggles and says well thank god your alivei had no idea. 
I'm still taking a ton of my mother's advice even if recent studies goes against it.

I tend to think it's less about being ignorant and more about the fact that you might actually know more than she does. I don't find the way you said it to be insulting at all. But some people are a little bit old school and when they find out that their child might actually know more than them, they get funny about it.

I had that issue with back sleeping... My sister in law (10yrs older than me) couldn't understand why I put my kids to sleep on their backs. She insisted they would sleep better on their stomachs. I just raised my hands and said, "I'm just doing what the books say." I don't want to take any risks with my kids.

Even with all the studies it does not mean that now days it's more appropriate like I have six kids when my oldest was born u had to have a snow suit on them socks on their feet and a hat on their head he was born in January and that's how the hospital made us leave when I had my last son in dec no snow suit was allowed we couldn't use head huggers if we put the car seat cover we weren't to use a hat or socks on his feet because he would be warm enough from my own experience examples or experience from when my parents and grandparents did have children I take it to heart but I use my own experience and I use it parenting does not come with a handbook and it will always be a learning experience not one of ur kids will be the same so the one thing that u did for one child may not be good enough for the next use mommas intuition
