Nitrous?

So i never heard of nitrous until my birthing class last night and im thinking about using it instead of epidural. I heard its common in the uk not so much in the us. How does it feel. How much pain did you feel?

I had a spinal block with my first, so I don't know exactly what nitrous is like but this question was asked a few days ago by a woman who was curious since she can't have a traditional epidural. From th multiple sources I read, baby center, WebMD, etc. nitrous is much less effective managing the pain, but makes you less caring about the pain. It affects some people differently whereas an epidural or spinal block is localized strong anesthetic.

It’s very common in Australia. You feel groggy, a bit high, and are kind of dissociated from the pain.

I love it! I’ve used it for dental work and a surgery once before. My neighbor used it for labor and had a great time with it. It’s what I intend to use during labor- there are so many drawbacks to an epidural, but there are no common side effects of nitrous and you can stop using it at any time! I really don’t see a reason why people shouldn’t use it or try it first. You can always change your mind if you want, but it’s a great, no-side effect option!

It’s intriguing but I don’t think I’m going to do it. I don’t like feeling drunk so I don’t think I’ll want to feel that way when giving birth!

I’ve gotten nitrous during dental work and I can say that it does nothing for the actual pain. It just makes you high/loopy but you still feel the pain. I also get nauseous with it. With the intense pain you get from the contractions being a little loopy will not help you with the pain (if you’re worried about pain).
