Should I get a gift for my son(8 y/o) so he doesn't feel left out at baby shower?

Kids don't need gifts for everything. Will you be giving gifts to your baby on your older child's birthday? Probably not. And if he's disappointed, that's ok. Everyone gets their special day and should learn that it's not always about them. This just makes me think of participation trophies.

I didn't get my 7 y/o a gift for the shower, but I do have something's for him when he comes to visit at the hospital.  For the shower, my mom took him to the store and let him pick out some gifts for the new baby all on his own and he felt special that he bought his own gift and I opened it at the shower. Just an idea :)

Your 8 year old is probably old enough to understand why they aren't receiving a gift.

I wouldn't get him anything, but like other posters suggested, could be a great time to teach him about the joys of giving and let him pick out some gifts for the baby. Maybe even set up some 'jobs' to do and/or use some money he has saved?

Also - I bet someone coming to the shower will think of him and bring him a little something.

If you really want to get him something, what about a big brother shirt? Or a special book (that he would like) that he can read to the baby? Something that isn't just a present for him, but also highlights his roll as a big brother?

I don't have any other children! Maybe you can let him help open gifts! Or secretly put in a few small gifts for him so he's surprised!!

We are doing a gift from baby brother to him,  and he will be getting baby brother a gift as well on the day baby brother is born.

I'm not, my son already gets lots of gifts for other occasions and he's the only grandchild on both sides for now  so he gets toys often
