a friend of mine is pregnant and is a carrier for canavan disease. what are the chances of her son having this disease?

Answer

Her son can only get it if the father is also a carrier, in which case his risk would be about 25%. Otherwise, if only the mother is a carrier and the father is not, then there’s a slight chance her son could also be a carrier, but there’s essentially no chance that the son could actually get it. 
I’m a carrier for a few things so they tested my husband to make sure he wasn’t a carrier for those same things. Luckily my husband isn’t a carrier for anything, so there was no risk to my son.
