PPI for GERD

Anyone else with a hiatal hernia, ulcer, and or pre existing gastroesophageal reflux disease???

I managed to get off of my PPI (protonix) and ulcer healing meds (sucrulfate) for a few months before we conceived, but now at 13 weeks my symptoms are severe. I’m dry heaving all day and it has become virtually impossible to eat or drink anything, and when I do try it comes back up when the acid does within about 10 minutes. I know that this gets much worse as the pregnancy progresses as I delivered my twins early due to these same symptoms.

I’ve put a call in to let my OB and midwife to let them know that I need to restart my meds, but I’m wondering if anyone has any firsthand experience taking a PPI during pregnancy. Was everything alright? From what I know they’re considered “safe” when necessary, but I just can’t help but worry and feel guilty for not just “dealing.”

And just as an aside, the usually recommended tums, Zantac, and even nexium are not effective for me. I tried them in vain for months with my twins and again the last few weeks with no relief.
