It depends on the cause of breakup. If there was cheatinf, degrading, physical and/or emotional abuse, or rape involved. Absolutely not.
But if it was simply miscommunication or you simply just needed time apart to grow individually, and if distance or life got in the way
Then its possible you could try to reconnect if you feel you and your partner would wish to give it another try. Sometimes people do need time apart.. sometimes people also arent compatible or on the same wavelength. You need to attract the right person in order for things to be balanced and your relationship will have potential of working out even after taking time apart.
