Do people use jokes to get over fear

When someone’s afraid do they use humor to hide it? I feel like some people do. A year ago parkland happened and all I’ve heard at my school was hidden jokes about it, I don’t get it Bc last year they were all silent about it now they’re making jokes. It’s serious not funny

When I was assaulted and I was getting my rape kit done in the hospital I realized I use humor to get over fear. I made jokes to the nurse (not about my rape but just generally making fun of our current government and whatnot). Now I can talk pretty freely about what happened to me and make jokes about how one day I’ll face him in court. That in no way is me saying that rape is funny but it’s kind of a coping mechanism

Yes and no. Some people do but others don’t mind offensive jokes. Some people can separate a joke from their experience 🤷🏻‍♀️ just depends on how the person reacts to the event and how thick their skin is.

Basic trainees often get really smiley and laugh at inappropriate times because they are nervous or scared.  It is a legitimate fear based reaction.
