Good whiskey brand for birthday gift?

Fiancé and I don’t drink but our friends birthday is tomorrow and all he wants from us is a bottle of whiskey for his house. We know nothing about alcohol lol, so what’s a good brand to buy him for his birthday? How much is it? Thank you so much!

What kind of whiskey does he like? Different people prefer different types.
I find US made whiskey to be absolute garbage in most cases. Canadian whiskey is good. Irish whiskey is good. Scotch is good, if you're into that sorta thing. 
It really just depends what he likes.
Crown Royal is a pretty safe bet for a whiskey drinker, imo.

Jack Daniels or Gentleman’s Jack.

Really depends on the person. I can’t stand regular jack Daniels but I do like gentleman jack.  Jameson is good for a basic Irish whiskey and so is Tellamore Dew. Mccallens is also a good one.

So I don’t drink either but I work at a higher end restaurant and the whiskey we sell is nicer, the kind everyone seems to love and is really popular there is called Elijah Craig and the price depends on the size of the bottle, here’s a pic of what it looks like and how much this bottle is
