When is it ok to demand an ultrasound.

I’m 5 weeks and 1 day today! I just went to the lab for a blood test to confirm (I’ve taken 5 positive tests at home), and they said they’d call back with results and potentially schedule my first appointment when I’m at 8-10 weeks. Is it ok for me to demand an earlier ultrasound? At the start of my 8 weeks, I’m traveling out of state with a group of close friends for four days. It’s supposed to be a fun trip full of drinking an they’ll be no way to avoid it without looking suspicious. I want to tell this group during that trip, but don’t want to tell without hearing a heartbeat first. 
Can I demand an ultrasound at 7 weeks? If they say no, what should I do?

Most dr won’t even perform US before 7 weeks unless your pregnancy is high risk. I have had 3 babies and had my ultrasounds between 8 - 12 weeks with them. I have a new dr This pregnancy I’ll have an US at 7 weeks and I’m a little upset bc it’s early, I rather have it later so everyone doesn’t have false expectations.

Another way around this is to tell just one friend you absolutely trust, but tell them you are not ready to tell anyone else. They need to keep your secret in the vault and run interference. And they cannot tell anyone what's happening.
A great friend won't drink too which takes the pressure off. A good friend will change the conversation if your friends are pestering you and demanding to know if you are pregnant, like this: "guys, don't give her a rough time. Even is she is pregnant, lots of people don't share that news in the beginning for health reasons. She'll share any news when she's good and ready. Now, if you were stuck on a desert Island with one of the characters from Friends, which one would you choose and why?" 
I didn't say the distraction was going to win any screenplay awards.

I’m leaving today for a girls weekend in Vegas. Yeah... lots of drinking. I’m only 5+2 so we’re not ready to share, but I don’t really have a choice. They’ll find out when everyone starts ordering plane drinks. Just tell your friends. Any excuse will give it away regardless. And if things do go badly, you’ll have there love and support. 
And I don’t think you can “demand” an ultrasound. You can ask, but it all depends on your doc and insurance. You can try to get a private scan, but many times they won’t see you until 8 weeks.

Wow I was in the exact same situation! Heading to Chicago this weekend to see my friends and I knew there would be a lot of drinking and I really didn't want to have to "pretend"- it would feel like lying and they are close friends. My doc doesn't do them before 8-10 weeks so I found a private elective ultrasound place that was willing to give it a shot w/ no promises because I'm still early (6 wks 4 days- transvaginal is clearer at this stage but these types of places typically only do abdominal) and we saw a strong heartbeat and baby was measuring right on target. Maybe there is one in your area?

There’s no harm in asking. It would really suck though if you got an early ultrasound and the baby wasn’t developed enough to hear a heartbeat and then you’d still not be able to tell you friends AND you’d spend the entire trip worried until the following week when they ask you to come back for a follow-up ultrasound. That actually happened to me and I had to come back the next week.

2. There’s a small chance you won’t see a heart beat because it’s too early, which is going to drive you more crazy.

My sister is an ultrasound tech in Canada they generally don't want to see you until at least 8 weeks because you can see more. Before that it's just a little blob with a flicker. Just be sneaky. When I visit family I fill an old liquor bottle with water to pretend, or fill coolers with just juice. Or if they are really close friends, say your trying for a baby and don't want to risk it. Then in a few weeks you can let them know. They will understand in the end.
