Define: Hookups

Just curious – I have this debate all the time with people, how do you define a hook up? Personally, I always thought it was just sex, nothing less, until I got to college and my friends would talk about how they "hooked up" with so and so at a party and I thought they meant they slept with this person, come to find out they only made out. So just curious, what are your thoughts?
