Iron Infusion?

Hiiii! 
I have to have an iron infusion through a drip on Monday due to the fact my iron tablets haven’t been being absorbed by my body 👍🏼 
Just wondering if it’s anything to be scared of or painful? All I’ve heard is that it only hurts when the needle goes in and that’s it & hopefully shouldn’t make me sick. 
And how long do they usually take? Help 🙈 x

I used to work in an infusion room( I’m a nurse!) and I have a lot of iron. You will have an IV so that hurts a little but but nothing worse than a blood draw. Iron sometimes burns the vein but they can run saline with it to prevent or lessen this.
How long the infusion takes depends on what kind of iron your doctor ordered, the dose, and policy of the clinic or hospital that is infusing it. A larger dose took two or three hours and a small one could be infused in 15 minutes or so. 
They will likely monitor your vitals... specifically your blood pressure. Iron infusions can sometimes cause people to have a weird reaction where your blood pressure drops and you feel hot and flushed. If this happens, they will stop the infusion and maybe give you Benadryl or Tylenol or both. It depends on your symptoms. It cAn feel really scary but is easy to manage. 
They might make you wait thirty minutes after you are done to be sure you don’t have a reaction after the infusion.
I’ve given lots of iron to lots of pregnant moms! Don’t be afraid! They will take care of you. Bring something to read and some water or a snack in case it’s longer than expected. Good luck😀

I do them once a week. No real reactions, I get a metallic taste in my mouth but it goes away. Mine take about 30 min for the infusion and 30 min for observation.

I had an infusion. It’s really a great thing. My OB said it’s as good or better as taking iron 2x daily for 3 months, all in one dose! You can feel the effects within about 1 week. My infusion was An hour and a half and it really wasn’t difficult or scary or anything, just you have An IV put in for it. Drink plenty of water before hand so they can find a vein.

Get used to it, you’ll have an IV in you when you go into labor but don’t worry it’s not too painful
