Would you rather your child fear disappointment or punishment?

My son is 6 months old and I was just thinking about the future and how disciplining should work because sadly it is a part of parenting. But I realized I never listened to my father and I honestly really don’t even respect him now at 22 or even have a solid relationship; with him I fears the punishments he gave because they were only ever physical even if I did something small. I also realized I always listened to my mom, hold such a high respect for my mom and call her multiple times a day as well as still seek her advice and listen to her wisdom; she never laid a hand on us but handed out consequences she deemed fair and talked us through why we did it, with her i only ever feared disappointment. It’s just so confusing to figure out the right way to discipline especially since my husband and I don’t fully see eye to eye.
