When are you getting your first sonogram/ultrasound scan?

Are they all necessary? What are they looking for?

I think every clinic is different but mine does one at roughly 7 weeks and it's a 'dating' scan and check to see the location of implantation in case it's ectopic. 
The one at 12 weeks checks for things like neural tube defects and Down's syndrome. 
And the 20 week scan is an anatomy scan to see that everything is progressing as it should.

They are not all necessary. Many doctors like an early scan for dating the pregnancy as it is the most accurate way to do so. Also, many like one around 20 weeks. It's called the anatomy scan where they look for any abnormalities. If you are having a normal healthy pregnancy these two may be the only ones you get. That is actually the recommendations for pregnancy, any more in a normal pregnancy is unnecessary. Remember, there is still debate on the safety of multiple scans as the tissue is changing so rapidly and no long term studies have been done. The safety of the 3-D places that are just for fun are highly debatable and not recommend.

Am high risks so I had one at 5weeks and one at 6 weeks they heard the babyheart but it was a low rate but I go bk this Monday 2 make sure my lil bean is alright keep me in y'all prayers

Im 6weeks 2days and classes as high risk because ive had 2 pprom babies and 3 miscarriages. Im still waiting for the clinic to ring me back with an appointment. I want an ultrasound tomorrow!

I got one at 4w6d (high risk) and found out in measuring a wk ahead. I go back in 2 wks for a progression scan.
